Using a Screen Reader for Microsoft Teams Calls

We tested Microsoft Teams with JAWS (Job Access With Speech) and NVDA (Nonvisual Desktop Access) to make and receive calls and check call history. Other accessible screen readers should also work.

Make and End Calls

Focused Navigation
  1. Move your focus to a contact or group of contacts you want to call. For example, in the list pane.
  2. Do the following:
    • To start an audio call, press ctrl + shift + c.
    • To start a video call, press ctrl + shift + u.
  3. The call window opens and you hear a ringing sound.
  4. To end the call, press tab until you hear hang up and press enter. The focus moves to the chat window.
Virtual Navigation
  1. Move your focus to a contact or group of contacts you want to call. For example, in the list pane.
  2. Do the following:
    • To start an audio call, press ctrl + shift + c.
    • To start a video call, press ctrl + shift + u.
  3. The call window opens and you hear a ringing sound.
  4. To end the call, press b until you hear hang up and press enter. The focus moves to the chat window.

Answer or Decline Calls

  1. When a contact calls you, the Microsoft Teams notification window opens. You hear a ringing sound, followed by the caller's name.
  2. Do the following:
    • To answer an audio call, press ctrl + shift + s.
    • To answer a video call, press ctrl + shift + a.
    • To decline the call, press ctrl + shift + d.

Check Call History

The calls history table in the Calls view lists the caller or recipient's name, the type of the call (incoming, outgoing, or missed), the duration, and the time of the call.

  1. In Microsoft Teams, press ctrl + 5 to access the Calls view. You hear calls.
  2. Press down arrow until you hear history and press enter. The focus moves to the calls History table.
  3. To navigate the calls History table, press up and down arrows. You hear the call details.
  4. To call back or chat with the caller or recipient, press spacebar and press the up or down arrow until you hear the option you want, and press enter.

Mac

Make and End Calls

  1. In Microsoft Teams, press command + e to go to the Search field.
  2. Type /call, press return, and type the name of the person you want to call. The search results update as you type.
  3. To navigate the list of results, press the down or up arrow. When you hear the person you want to call, to start an audio call, press return. To start a video call, press command + shift + u.
  4. To end the call, press tab until you hear hang up and press control + option + spacebar.

Answer or Decline Calls

  1. When a contact calls you, the Microsoft Teams notification window opens, and you hear the caller's name.
  2. Do the following:
    • To answer an audio call, press command + shift + s.
    • To answer a video call, press command + shift + a.
    • To decline the call, press command + shift + d.

Check Call History

  1. In Microsoft Teams, press command + 5 to go to the Calls view. You hear contacts.
  2. Press the down arrow until you hear history, then press return. The call history table opens. The table lists the name or number related to the call, the call type (incoming, outgoing, or missed), the duration, and the date of the call.
  3. To navigate the table, press the up and down arrows. You hear the information as you move.
  4. To call back, start a chat, or add the person or number to your speed dial, press spacebar to open the More actions menu and then press the down arrow to move down the menu. When on the option you want, press return.
